The Pirate Song

To the mast nail our flag it is dark as the grave,
Or the death which it bears while it sweeps o'er the wave;
Let our deck clear for action, our guns be prepared;
Be the boarding-axe sharpened, the scimetar bared:
Set the canisters ready, and then bring to me,
For the last of my duties, the powder-room key.
It shall never be lowered, the black flag we bear;
If the sea be denied us, we sweep through the air.
Unshared have we left our last victory's prey;
It is mine to divide it, and yours to obey:
There are shawls that might suit a sultana's white neck,
And pearls that are fair as the arms they will deck.

There are flasks which, unseal them, the air will disclose
Diametta's fair summers, the home of the rose.
I claim not a portion: I ask but as mine
'Tis to drink to our victory - one cup of red wine.
Some fight, 'tis for riches - some fight, 'tis for fame:
The first I despise, and the last is a name.

I fight, 'tis for vengeance! I love to see flow,
At the stroke of my sabre, the life of my foe.
I strike for the memory of long-vanished years;
I only shed blood where another shed tears,
I come, as the lightning comes red from above,
O'er the race that I loathe, to the battle I love.

The Pirate Song

Pirate Song
The Pirate Song! Think of Pirates and you soon think of a Pirate Song. Most likely it will be the 'Fifteen Men' Pirate Song which was immortalised in the Robert Louis Stevenson book about pirates - Treasure Island. However, there is a lesser known chant which is known as the 'Pirate Song' which reflects the life of a pirate. Fifteen Men on a Dead Man's Chest Pirate Song
The most famous words are from the first four lines of this pirate song are :
Fifteen men on a dead man's chest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Drink and the devil had done for the rest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
The Robert Louis Stevenson novel "Treasure Island" was published in 1883. The words and lyrics of the first line of the pirate song "Fifteen men on a dead man's chest" are explainable! Dead Man's Chest is a tiny island that forms part of the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean Sea. Pirate legends of the Caribbean claim that the notorious pirate, Edward Teach ( Blackbeard ), marooned 15 of his pirate crew on 'Dead Man's Chest' as a punishment for their mutiny and desertion. All pirates had their own Pirate Code of Conduct. Article VII of the Pirate Code agreed by Bartholomew Roberts ( Black Bart ) and his pirate crew in the Shipboard Articles of 1721 stated: He that shall desert the ship or his quarters in time of battle
shall be punished by death or marooning
The Pirate Code of Blackbeard stated that each pirate who was marooned should be given a cutlass and a bottle of rum. The scenes in the movie 'Pirates of the Caribbean' were therefore based on fact! The pirate hero, Captain Jack Sparrow, was given a pistol instead of a cutlass when he was marooned by his pirate shipmates!

A Hundred Years Ago

Lyrics

A hundred years is a very long time,
Ho, yes, ho!
A hundred years is a very long time,
A hundred years ago.

They used to think that pigs could fly
Ho, yes, ho!
I don't believe it, no, not I.
A hundred years ago.

They thought the moon was made of cheese.
Ho, yes, ho!
You can believe it if you please.
A hundred years ago.

They thought the stars were set a-light,
Ho, yes, ho!
By some good angel every night,
A hundred years ago.

They hung a man for making steam,
Ho, yes, ho!
They cast his body in the stream.
A hundred years ago.

A hundred years is a very long time,
Ho, yes, ho!
A hundred years is a very long time,
A hundred years ago.

Blow th' Man Down

Traditional - Lyrics from Capstan Bars, by David Bone

Oh! Blow th' man down, bullies. Blow th' man down.
W-ay! Hey? Blow th' man down!
Oh! Blow th' man down bullies. Blow 'im right down.
Give us th' time an' we'll blow th' man down!

As I was walkin' down Paradise Street,
W-ay! Hey? Blow th' man down!
A smart little clipper I chanced for to meet.
Give us th' time an' we'll blow th' man down!

Her flag was three-coloured, I couldn't tell which.
W-ay! Hey? Blow th' man down!
An' from her appearance, I took 'er for Dutch.
Give us th' time an' we'll blow th' man down!

She was round in th' corner an' bluff in th' bow.
W-ay! Hey? Blow th' man down!
An' I hailed her in English, an' took 'er in tow.
Give us th' time an' we'll blow th' man down!

I tipped 'er my flipper an' off we did go.
W-ay! Hey? Blow th' man down!
To th' "Anchor an' Crown" where my money did show.
Give us th' time an' we'll blow th' man down!

Oh, it's "Are ye a rouster from off th' Black Ball?"
W-ay! Hey? Blow th' man down!
"An' robbed some poor sailor o' boots, clothes an' all."
Give us th' time an' we'll blow th' man down!

"Oh, no, Missus Harty. You do me quite wrong."
W-ay! Hey? Blow th' man down!
"I'm a flyin'-fish sailor, just in from Hong Kong."
Give us th' time an' we'll blow th' man down!

Yo ho, haul together
Hoist the colours high.
Heave ho,
Thieves and beggars
Never shall we die!

The king and his men
Stole the queen from her bed,
and bound her in her bones.
The seas be ours,
and by the powers,
Where we will, we'll row!

Yo ho, haul together,
Hoist the Colours high!
Heave ho,
Theives and beggars,
NEVER SHALL WE DIE!

Some men have died
and some are alive,
and others sail on the sea.
With the keys to the cage,
and the Devil to pay
we lay to Fiddlers green!

The bell has been raised,
from its watery grave.
Do you hear its sepulchral tone?!

We are a call to call,
Pay head to the squall,
and turn your head toward home!

Yo ho, haul together
Hoist the Colours high!,
Heave ho,
Thieves and beggars,
Never-shall-we-die!!!!

Well, Jack was a sailor, and he walked up to town,
And she was a damsel who skipped up and down.
Says the damsel to Jack,as she passed by,
Would yo care for to purchase some ole' bungo rye!

Ruddy rye, Ruddy rye, fall the diddle die,
Ruddy rye, Ruddy rye!

Says Jack to himself, 'What can this be?',
But the finest of whiskey from far Ger-man-ie!!
Snuggled up in a basket and sold on the sly,
And the name that it goes by is ole' bungo rye!

Ruddy rye, Ruddy rye, fall the diddle die
Ruddy rye, Ruddy rye.

Jack gave her a pound, 'cause he thouht nothin strange.
Hold the basket, young man, while I run for your change,
Jack peeked in the basket and a child he did spy,
I'll be damned! 'This is queer Bungo Rye!!!'

Oh Ruddy rye, me ruddy rye!
Fall the diddle die!!!

My Father was the keeper of Eddystone light,
And he slept with a mermaid one fine night!
Of this strange union there came three;
Twas a porpoise,

And a tuna;
and then came me!!
Yo ho! The wind blows free,
Oh fer the life on the rolling sea!

One night I was trimmin' of the glim
And singin the verse from the evenin' hymn,
When a voice to starboard shouted 'Ahoy!'
And there was me mother was a sittin' on a buoy!

Yo ho, the wind blows free,
Oh fer the life on the rollin' sea!

What has become of my children three?
My mother did ask of me,
One was shown as a talkin' fish,
And the other served on a chafing dish!

Yo ho, the winds blow free,
Oh fer the life on the rollin' sea!

Then the phosphorus flashed in her seaweed hair,
And I looked again and me mother wasn't there.
A voice came echoing out of the night,
To hell with the keeper of the Eddystone Light!!!!

Yo ho, the winds blow free,
Oh fer the life on the rollin' seas!

and they sail their ships across the ocean blue, a blood thirsty captain and a cut throat crew
Any buccanier would have killed his mate for a bag of guenies or a piece of eight.
shiver me timbers shiver me sides there are hungers as strong as the wind and tides, yo ho heave ho!
